A Review
of Reluctant Reunion
by Derek Hill (SHS)
The novel Reluctant Reunion: a Novel of Suspense by
Jim Majure takes place at Hidden Hills lodge overlooking gigantic
Grenada Lake, one of the South’s largest lakes. Graduates from
the 1920’s through the 1930’s are drawn together from all over the
world for a weekend with some longtime friends and some heldon
grudges. At this reunion only a couple of people are
allowed to have a specific boat for a large treasure hunt. Mary Beth
Driscoll is in charge of all arrangements for the treasure hunt and
boating requirements. She is Dr. Tyler Driscoll’s ex-wife.
At midnight, Mary Driscoll calls all of the people who are ready
for the hunt. The boats have only small lights which make
visibility nearly impossible.
While the
hunt is on, a person notices that there is a fire on the lake and
motions to one of the captains of a boat. Everybody notices
the ball of fire coming from a boat and quickly shut down the boat
throttle. Adam, one of the people on a boat, realizes that the
burning boat belongs to Charmaine and Tyler Driscoll. Adam
shouts out. but there is no answer from the boat. He drives
his boat towards the flame and sees that no one is in the boat.
He uses a flare and looks across the levee. He sees a lady
with hardly any clothes, drives the boat to her and is informed
that Tyler is dead.
Adam and Duling Marcus, a
friend from high school, go to a nice hotel and spend the night.
In the morning Adam calls the Center where Dr. Driscoll used to
work. The receptionist tells him where his room is and when they
close. The security guard punches the alarm code in and
lets him out. Adam goes to an electronics store and
buys a wireless keypad for the alarm system. At 9:30 p.m. he uses
the wireless keypad to shut the alarm system down, goes to the room,
hears a noise, and hides in the closet. A maid comes
in and cleans the room. Soon after she leaves, a man whose
name is Dr. Terracina enters. A lady comes in and talks to
Dr. Terracina, who tries to kill her. Adam jumps out of the closet and
knocks the would-be murdered out. Adam tells
her that he will call her. He returns to the hotel.
Adam
Walton and Duling Marcus hear that Dr. Terracina has gone to Port
Gibson. They learn Terracina has dies and that parts of his body
have been discovered strewn everywhere. Police tell them
that a wild animal possibly attacked him in the woods. Adam
grabs his glock .45 and headd for Port Gibson. He
goes to the area where the body was found and notices that no one
is around. He takes the gun out of his car and
puts it in his belt. He sees an old concentration
camp. The camp looks as if someone has cleaned it up and left in
a hurry. As Adam heads back to his car, a policeman
approaches him and questions his presence in that area.
Suddenly, a large animal comes out of the woods and attacks the
policeman. Adam pulls out his gun and shoots the wild
boar in the head twice. The policeman asked Adam to call
for an ambulance. realized that
After
the policeman recovers , he tells Adam who was responsible for the
deaths of Dr. Tyler and Dr. Terracina. The people at the reunion
are pleased to learn that Adam and Duling were responsible for
figuring out the mystery .
The novel Reluctant Reunion was very interesting
in the beginning. The plot kept me interested for the
first seventeen chapters. The plot than weakened some,
and the suspense slowed for awhile. During the last five
chapters, my interest increased again.. The book has a
great ending. Majure is an excellent writer, and
I liked reading his book.
