Biography of John
Dittmer
JOHN DITTMER, a professor emeritus of history
at DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, is the author
of Black Georgia in the Progressive Era, 1900-1920. From
1967 to 1979 he taught history at Tougaloo College in Mississippi.
His book Local People:The Struggle for Civil Rights in
Mississippi won the following awards:
- Bancroft Prize in American History
- Lillian Smith Book Award, Southern Regional Council
- McLemore Prize, Mississippi Historical Society
- 1995 Outstanding Book on the subject of human rights in North America given by the Gustavus Myers Center
